Hiya all,
Over the holidays i have been reading up on GZIP support for MGA.
Today i got it all setup and working.
What is this GZIP support?
Well basically when ever some one requests (visits) an MGA site the server GZIPs (zips) up the files and sends them compressed, you then unpack them at your side. This means each visit tot he site takes less time to load everything and the MGA servers send out less data.
What does this mean for me?
MGA sites should load a little faster now
What has changed for me?
nothing
(aslong as u have a gzip enabled browser they all have been since 1985+)
What does this mean for MGA
a bit chnage in bandwidth usage
here are some tests done on the web sites
http://www.mgawow.co.uk/index.php is gzipped
Original Size: 16.56 KB
Gzipped Size: 4.87 KB
Data Savings: 70.59%
http://forum.mgawow.co.uk/index.php is gzipped
Original Size: 37.63 KB
Gzipped Size: 8.55 KB
Data Savings: 77.28%
http://armory.mgawow.co.uk/index.php is gzipped
Original Size: 13.05 KB
Gzipped Size: 3.38 KB
Data Savings: 74.1%
as you can see we get some UBER data savings 70-77% less data :)
This now means we can support even more players on MGA :)
Also on a side project i have started work on a light version of the MGAWoW site for mobile devices, if you try and access http://www.mgawow.co.uk from any mobile device you will get redirected to http://mobi.mgawow.co.uk and u will get to see the light version of the site made for mobile (cell) phone and other hand held screen size. Ofc if you wish u can still view the normal site from your mobile device :) .
EDIT:
Forgot to say, if for some reason you dont have a browser that was made after 1985 or you have some stupid browsers that doesnt support GZIP dont worrie the server will detect this and send you non GZIPed data :)
