There is a way to do this quest,

Speak to the guy to put u into the realm of shadows then right click the buff to go out and u challenge the guy.

For all that are lost here NPC that gives you q also gets you to shadows but you need to speak to him AGAIN

PS: After mounting you go back and pres ability 1 near yout q giver. After taht you probably won't be able to give in q. Wait a while q giver will start pacing again turn it in then.
